Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, NOV. 23. Although the municipality is lifting 350 tonnes of waste every day, it is finding it difficult to dispose of it. There have been strong protests against the dumping of garbage in and around residential areas here. A group of residents of Uppalam accompanied by the local legislator and secretary of the AIADMK State committee, A. Anbalagan, today squatted on the road near the level crossing here protesting the dumping of the garbage in their area. Officials of the Pondicherry and Oulgaret municipalities and police rushed to the spot to pacify the protesters, and held talks with Mr. Anbalagan and office-bearers of the residents association. The protesters dispersed after officials promised to act on their demands.
