Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, NOV. 23. Volunteers of the Pondicherry unit of the Hindu Munnani and other pro-Hindu organisations staged a nine-hour fast at Avvai Thidal at Saram near here today, protesting the arrest of the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi. The president of the Pondicherry unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, R. Kesavalu, the secretary of the Tamil Nadu unit of the Hindu Munnani, Parameswararan, and the Pondicherry unit's functionaries, including its Secretary, A. Kannan, were among those who took part in the fast. The Munnani said the arrest of the seer on Deepavali day was a direct onslaught on Hindus and was an insult to the name and reputation of the Kanchi mutt. The protesters also condemned the vilification campaign by a section of the media against the Acharya.
