Lakhera's advice: be positive

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry, Nov. 23. The Pondicherry Lt. Governor, M.M. Lakhera, has appealed to citizens to work towards the constructive development of the Union Territory instead of dissipating their energy in mutual accusations and recriminations.

Declaring open a photo exhibition organised by the Department of Information and Publicity highlighting the golden jubilee of Pondicherry's freedom (de facto merger) at Mairie (municipal office) today, he said the younger generation should take pride in the State's history.

Expressing anguish over the deluge of complaints the Government had been receiving over the arrangements made for the celebrations, Mr. Lakhera said this was not a good development.

The celebration was not only an opportunity to take stock but to prepare a road map for the betterment of future generations. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, who released a book Puducheri Nagarin Paarambaria Kattidakalai (the traditional architecture of Pondicherry town) said that the Union Territory had made rapid strides over the last 50 years. The quantum of resources mobilised from within had been increased, though Central assistance was on the decline.

The 280 exhibits on display at the exhibition highlight the services of Pondicherry's freedom fighters.

The Education Minister, K. Lakshminarayanan, said the exhibits should be preserved permanently.

The District Collector and Information Secretary, V. Candavelou, said various institutions including The Hindu and the Press Information Bureau had helped the Government with the necessary material relating to the reports that had appeared in the pre-merger days. The Lt. Governor requested freedom fighter A. Arulraj and the former Mayor of Pondicherry, Saraswathi Subbiah, to join him in inaugurating the exhibition.
