Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, NOV. 23. The former Local Administration Minister and Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) MLA, `Theni' C. Jayakumar, was among those who courted arrest here today during a road blockade demanding a wage hike for workers of the Bharathi and Swadeshi cotton mills. Mr. Jayakumar, accompanied by party volunteers, blocked traffic urging the National Textiles Corporation (NTC) to pay higher wages to the workers of the two mills run by it, as recommended by the Special Industrial Tribunal last year and directed by the court a few months ago. Addressing the volunteers, Mr. Jayakumar said the TMC would intensify its protest if the Corporation did not take steps to implement the award. He said the Pondicherry Administration should take over the Bharathi and Swadeshi cotton mills. The Panjalai Thozilalar Sangam president, P. Kuppusamy, and its members were also arrested.
