Farmers' panel tours agency area
By Our Special Correspondent
SRIKAKULAM,
NOV. 23.
Lack of accessibility to credit facility, leading to dependence on middlemen who extract exorbitant rates of interest, problem of agricultural inputs in the form of adulteration, lack of crop insurance and marketing facilities and failure to get remunerative prices for the farm produce were some problems identified by the Farmers Welfare Commission, which toured parts of the agency area in Srikakulam district on Tuesday.
Speaking to newsmen at the ITDA office in Sitampeta, about 70 from here, Jayati Ghosh, chairperson of the Commission, advocated more active intervention by the Government to help farmers. It was only as a last resort that farmers commit suicides, Mr.Ghosh observed. The Commission completed its tour programme by covering eight districts, viz Chittoor, Anantapur, Guntur, Mahboobnagar, Warangal, Khammam, Guntur and Srikakulam. It would submit a report to the Government soon. While the problems faced by farmers varied in different parts, lack of a remunerative price for the crops was common to all places.
