State may get one more reserve battalion

By Our Correspondent

KAKINADA, NOV.23. One more Indian Reserve Battalion is on the cards and the location and other modalities are being worked out, according to Ch. Koteswerarao Additional DGP, Battalions. Speaking to newsmen here on Tuesday, he said the new battalion, probably located in and around Hyderabad would be the fifth Indian Reserve Battalion in the State, the others being at Venkatagiri, Cuddapah, Beechpally abd Mancherial. These units would be at the disposal of the Central Government for deployment wherever necessary to deal with law and order situations.

Mr. Koteswerarao said the Centre would provide Rs.13 crores for raising the battalion and the State Government would cough up the Rs. 20 crores required for making the battalion fully functional.

Best in country

With this battalion, he said, the total number of battalions including nine ASPSP units, would go up to fourteen. He claimed that battalions in the State were considered the best in the country. He cited the case of the Tenth APSP Battalion at Beechpalli, which bagged the best contingent award competing with the Military and Air Force units at the Republic Day parade this year.

House sites likely

On welfare measures, he said, every battalion was now provided with a well-equipped hospital and effort is being made to provide house site too.

He claimed that the peace talks initiated by the State Government did not have a demoralising effect on the APSP personnel.

D. Seetharamaraju, DIG, and K. Rajarathnam Naidu, Commandant, said fourteen women self-help groups were formed in the battalion and training was being imparted enlisting the support of DRDA in embroidery and lace making.
