`TDP not against irrigation projects'

By Our Staff Reporter

KARIMNAGAR, NOV. 23. Refuting the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's charges that the Telugu Desam Party was obstructing irrigation projects in the State, the TDP politburo member, S. Venugopala Chary, has alleged that the Congress Government was doing `dhana-yagnam' (money-making) in the name of `jala yagnam' (water conservation).

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Mr. Chary said the State Government's misdeeds were exposed with the High Court verdict on the tenders issue.

The state exchequer had earned revenue to the tune of Rs. 3,000 crores following the cancellation of tenders to three contractors, he claimed.

He reiterated that the TDP was not against irrigation projects but only against the misuse of public money. Launching a scathing attack he alleged that the Government had failed to fulfil its election promises.

Contrary to its statements, the number of farmers and weavers committing suicide had gone up to 2,000 within six months. He said the Government had failed to rescue the farmers by announcing minimum support price to cotton, maize, jowar etc.
