Arrest intimation served on Acharya in assault case

VELLORE, NOV. 23. The Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, who is in the Central prison here in connection with a murder case, was today formally arrested in a case relating to the attack on S. Radhakrishnan, a former associate of the Sankara Mutt, Kancheepuram, in Chennai two years ago.

The Chief Investigating Officer in the Sankararaman murder case, S.P. Sakthivelu, met the Acharya in the prison this afternoon and served him the arrest intimation in the attack case.

Since the Acharya had been arrested in the Sankararaman murder case and remanded to judicial custody till November 26, the police officer served a formal arrest warrant and the seer received it. The officer, the sources said, would submit a copy of the warrant in the court concerned.

The Acharya's counsel, K.S. Dinakaran, Kunjithapadham and V. Krishnaswamy, separately met the seer in the prison today. The sources said the investigation of the case pertaining to the attack on Mr. Radhakrishnan, which was also handed over to the special team probing the temple murder, was on in full swing. The victim had been examined by police a few days ago. The examination was done a couple of times in the past too. On September 20, 2002, Mr. Radhakrishnan, his wife and an attendant were attacked by two persons at their house on Norton First Street at Mandaveli in Chennai. Armed with knives, the two attacked the family but fled the scene after the victims raised an alarm. Neighbours rushed to their rescue.

Police had said that two of those arrested in connection with the temple murder were involved in the Mandaveli attack also.
