A `padayatra' to collect taxes

By Our Staff Correspondent

The Minister of State for Labour, Tanveer Sait, on a `padayatra' in Mysore on Tuesday.

MYSORE, NOV. 23. Traders on D. Devaraja Urs Road, Sayyaji Rao Road and K.R. Circle received an unusual visitor who chose not to make any purchases. The visitor was seeking their cooperation in managing the affairs of the Mysore City Corporation (MCC).

It was a pleasant surprise for businessmen when the Minister of State for Labour, Tanveer Sait, entered their shops on Tuesday morning.

The Minister was on a mission to persuade traders to pay arrears, some of which are pending since 1996-97. Explaining the reason for his visit, Mr. Sait said he was on a padayatra of a different kind, and requested traders to pay their tax arrears.

"If you don't pay your taxes, it becomes difficult for the MCC to manage civic affairs efficiently. Prompt payment helps the corporation strengthen infrastructure such as roads, water supply, clearing garbage, maintenance of street lights and protection of heritage buildings," he said.

Accompanied by senior officials of MCC, including MCC Commissioner, A.B. Ibrahim, and the Mayor, Dakshinamurthy, he visited several shops, explaining the motive behind the padayatra. He also asked traders to attend a meeting at the Mysore Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Sait said that the tax arrears in the MCC had increased over the years. House tax arrears stood at Rs. 22 crores and water tax arrears had swollen to Rs. 36 crores. "This padayatra was not only to convince the traders to pay their taxes, but also to prepare officials for better tax collection," he said.

Mr. Sait said that it had become imperative for the Mysore City Corporation to move towards self-reliance as funds from the State Government had decreased.
