HYDERABAD, NOV. 23. It was a proud and historic occasion for the corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) when the I EME Centre here was presented colours by the Chief of the Army Staff, N.C.Vij, at an impressive ceremonial parade on Tuesday. Colours are presented by the President or the Chief of the Army Staff on behalf of the President, who is the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, to a corps/regiment in recognition of its achievements, contribution, bravery and operational efficiency. The corps of EME was among the first to receive colours from the then President, S. Radhakrishnan, on October 15, 1964. The rechristening of the corps as "Electronics and Mechanical Engineers" in 2001 necessitated the presentation of the new colours. Perhaps, it is the only unit in the country to receive the colours twice.
Significant role
In his address, Gen.Vij lauded the corps of EME for its invaluable contribution to the army. It had played a significant role in all the operations and won many gallantry awards. It adopted new technologies and was imparting training to as many as 8,000 recruits, including those from abroad. He praised its services during natural calamities and for having produced national and international sportsmen. Later, the vehicles designed and developed by the Corps of EME, including the fast attack vehicle, Windy, were displayed. Gen. Vij also released the patent certificate of Windy and a commemorative First Day Cover brought out to mark the eighth re-union celebrations of Corps of EME.
Breath-taking display
A breath-taking display of aerobatics was exhibited by the IAF Surya Kiran team to mark the event. Lt. Gen. V. K. Dhir, DG of EME, Lt.Gen.V.C.Jain, Commandant, MCEME, several serving and retired officers attended the function held as part of the celebrations. Earlier, Gen.Vij laid a wreath at 1 EME Centre War Memorial and paid homage to martyrs.
