Milma to hike price soon

By Our Staff Reporter

THRISSUR, NOV. 23. The Milma is likely to increase milk prices this financial year itself because of the increase in the various transportation and input costs.

The chairman of the Milma's Ernakulam Regional Cooperative Milk Producers' Union (ERCMPU), P. S. Sebastian and the director, Balan Master, told reporters here today that the rate of increase and the exact date of bringing it into effect had not been finalised.

They said there had been an increase of 35 paise per litre of milk in the transportation and processing costs after the cooperative increased the price last November.

The repeated rise in price of diesel, furnace oil and electricity charges were forcing another round of increase in milk price, they said. Mr. Sebastian said the Milma Thrissur dairy had obtained ISO certification for ensuring quality in the production of milk and other related products from RINA, Italy.

Obtain certification

With this, all the dairies of the Milma Ernakulam Union have obtained the ISO certification. Milma would strive to obtain the HACCP certification - the highest standard certificate in the food security sector for the Thrissur dairy in the coming year. The Milma Ernakulam dairy had already obtained this certification.

The Speaker, Therambil Ramakrishnan, will hand over the certificate to the Milma officials at a function to be held at the dairy unit building at Ramavarmapuram near here on Friday. The Forest Minister, K. P. Viswanathan, will inaugurate a public meeting to be held in this connection. K. P. Rajendran, MLA, will inaugurate the `Milma Nagar' project aimed at starting milk booths in 25 housing colonies in Thrissur city. The project is being launched with the cooperation of residents' associations.
