Kottayam
By Our Staff Reporter
KOTTAYAM, NOV. 23. The CPI(M) State secretary, Pinarayi Vijayan, has called for an inquiry into the medical treatment provided to Shaari S. Nair, the victim of the Kiliroor sex racket. Speaking to mediapersons here today, Mr. Vijayan asked the authorities to set up a high-level panel of medical experts of national repute for this purpose. Reiterating his party's allegation that the girl was `murdered in a systematic way,' he said the details of the treatment given to the girl during her earlier stay at the Kottayam Medical College Hospital and later at two private hospitals should be brought under the close scrutiny of such an investigation. The way the investigation is conducted now is highly unsatisfactory, he said. The investigation should have been entrusted to an officer of proven excellence. Instead, it has been handed over to an officer close to the Chief Minister, he said adding that the integrity of the Chief Minister himself has come under a cloud in this regard.
Resignation sought
Mr. Vijayan asked the Industries Minister, P.K. Kunhalikutty, to step down immediately. Reacting to a question, Mr. Vijayan said the party was gradually intensifying the agitation on the ice-cream parlour sex racket. That the agitation has lost steam is a nonsensical allegation from interested quarters, he said. The image of the party has not been affected, he said adding that it is the image of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) which has been affected on account of the sex scandal.
Ice-cream parlour case
He said the investigation into the ice-cream parlour sex scandal during the LDF rule was effective and it was entrusted to a person holding the rank of Inspector General of Police. He, however, was not interested in handing over the investigation to the CBI because as a general policy, the CPI(M) was not interested in the investigation by the CBI. ``What have they done in the Muthanga issue,'' he asked. To another question, he said there was consensus regarding the ice-cream parlour sex racket issue in the LDF. Mr. Vijayan later inaugurated a dharna organised by the CPI(M) as part of its agitation against government apathy in the investigation into the Kiliroor sex racket.
