THRISSUR, NOV. 23. The services of the Child Line launched by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MSJE) to reach out to the children in distress will be strengthened in the district. Addressing a press conference here today, the district level activists and advisory board members of the Child Line service said the children below the age of 18 can avail themselves of the services freely round the clock by dialling the number 1098. The calls can be made either by the children or by the elders on their behalf. Assistance such as counselling, ensuring education, providing medical care, legal help and even shelter will be extended. Protection from torture and arranging sponsorship are also the services offered by the Child Line. So far, they have received 55,864 calls seeking help for children ever since the services informally began here last year. About 20 children who were engaged as domestic child labourers were rehabilitated by the organisation. Another 120 street children were given shelter during this period. The service is being maintained through a network of 80 orphanages in the district.
Services
The Child Line offers its services to street children, orphaned children, lost children, tortured and exploited children, children infected by AIDS/HIV or who have suffered injuries in accidents, mentally and physically challenged children, children who leave their homes and drug addicts. They said the work on the Child Line that was pioneered in the country by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, in 1996 was later extended to different regions by the MSJE. Now, the services, which are included in the Integrated Development of Street Children programme, are available in 56 cities in India.
Regions
In Kerala, the services are available in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikkode, Wayanad and Thrissur. The services will be inaugurated by the Speaker, Therambil Ramakrishnan, at a function to be held at the Town Hall here on Thursday. The ADM P. Rajan, the Director of the Child Line Nodal Organisation, Sister Rose Dheera, the district coordinator P.S. Lajeen, the advisory committee member, C.B. Mohandasan, and the DySP, P.K. Gopinathan, were among those present at the press conference.
