CHITRADURGA, NOV. 23. Students staged a silent protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office on Monday condemning the Government Order regarding the closure of the Vani Vilas Sugar Factory at Hiriyur. The protestors said that drought-prone district had poor irrigation facilities. The district's employment potential was also very poor. It was the duty of the Government to open new industries and provide employment opportunities. The Government, on the contrary, was closing down the sugar factory, the protestors said. They said that it was very unfortunate that the Government had decided against reviving the factory that had incurred a loss of Rs. 30 crores. The district in-charge minister, who promised to revive the factory by selling the factory land to raise funds as a last resort, had changed his stand in the wake of the order that was issued recently, the protestors alleged. They said that the struggle demanding the revival of the factory would be intensified. The protestors submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner urging the Government to revoke the order within a week. Nulenur Shankarappa, general secretary of the district unit of the Raitha Sangha, and Govinda Gownalli, T. Shivamurthy, Prashanthkumar, Siddesh, and S.Vijay student leaders, led the protest.
