DAVANGERE, NOV. 23. Shyamanur Shivashankarappa, MLA and secretary of the Bapuji Education Association, has said that national-level sports and cultural meets would help in building national integration among students. Inaugurating the youth festival of the Visveswaraiah Technical University (VTU) organised by the Bapuji Institute of Engineering and Technology here on Monday, Mr. Shivashankarappa said that teachers had to realise that their duty included inculcating a feeling of oneness among the students. He said that education should help mould the behaviour and attitude of students. The Vice-Chancellor of the VTU, K. Balaveerareddy, called upon the students to be innovative and creative. He said that many students had "unique capabilities" in many fields and claimed that the university had been initiating various measures to explore students' talents. He also announced that the number of scholarships given to students who exhibited talent in sports and cultural activities had increased from 50 to 100. In the inter-university level, VTU had secured the first place in the aquatic competitions in the men's category. He said that the university had performed well in the other sports activities competitions. Umashri, MLC and film actress, spoke. Y. Vrushabendrappa, principal of the college, welcomed the gathering.
