TIRUNELVELI, NOV. 23. A sub-ordinate court at Tenkasi today ordered attachment of nine Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation buses after the State Government undertaking failed to pay compensation to accident victims. As nearly one third of the buses of the Tenkasi depot were attached this evening and parked near the court, commuters were put to hardship to return to their villages, resulting in a scramble for private vans, which cashed in on the opportunity. In a road accident, involving a TNSTC bus and a van near Alangulam on the Tenkasi - Tirunelveli stretch on March 19, 2001, 10 passengers, including P. Maareeswari of Kanakkupillaivalasai, C. Ananthi and Seevalingam, both from Seevanallur, were killed and many, including Maareeswari's father-in-law, Narasingam, injured. On behalf of the three deceased and Mr. Narasingam, petitions, seeking compensation were filed in the Tenkasi sub-court. The judge, Jaganathan, ordered the TNSTC to pay Rs. 3,84,286 to the kin of the victims on November 19, 2002. He also ordered the insurance company to pay the like sum to the victims' families. Though the insurance company paid the compensation, the TNSTC failed to honour the court's directive, forcing the judge to order the attachment of buses today.
