Ambika Soni to look after Tamil Nadu

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, NOV. 23. The All-India Congress Committee today appointed Ambika Soni general secretary in-charge of Tamil Nadu.

Ms. Soni, who now looks after party affairs in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, will take care of Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands also. She takes the place of Salman Khurshid, who was appointed president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee.

`Avoid frequent shifting'

While welcoming the appointment, partymen here feel that frequent shifting of general secretaries will affect the "rhythm of functioning." In the last three years, three AICC functionaries have held charge of the State. First it was the secretary, Ramesh Chennitala, then it was the general secretary, Kamal Nath, and finally Mr. Khurshid.

When he began a tour of districts with a workers' meeting in Madurai, Mr. Khurshid had the taste of groupism. A section shouted slogans against the State chief, G.K. Vasan, and demanded his immediate removal.

Mr. Khurshid, upset at the behaviour of the partymen, took disciplinary action against them in consultation with the high command. But those who were suspended got the order revoked through their mentors in New Delhi, say party functionaries.
