Parliamentary panel inspects Jurala

MAHABUBNAGAR, NOV. 23. Ten members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on water resources, headed by its Chairman, Raypati Sambasiva Rao, and convener, Manda Jagannadham, visited the district on Tuesday to inspect Jurala irrigation project.

Committee members, assisted by five officers of the Central Water Commission, on way to Jurala project inspected left main canal at Pebbiar. When the members reached Jurala guest house on the outskirts of Gadwal, they came to know that their visit was kept a secret by project officials.

Irked over this, Mr. Jagannadham, Nagarkurnool MP, chided officials and asked as to why their visit was kept a secret.

"We have come here to know how the works are being taken up and how far ayacutdars are benefited. But you have kept us away from them," he said. He came out of the guest house without taking lunch in protest against the officials' action and boarded the vehicle which took the members to the Jurala project.

An official explained to the members that the hydra-electrical project that was proposed to generate 240 MW of power would be completed by 2007-end. He told them that an amount of Rs.220 crores was needed to complete the project by which 1.2 lakh acres of ayacut would be irrigated under it.
