WARANGAL, NOV. 23. Telugu Desam workers, led by MLAs - E. Dayakar Rao and V. Narender Reddy -- staged a dharna at the Enumamula agricultural market yard here on Tuesday demanding minimum support price for cotton farmers. Party workers gathered at the market yard in the early hours and tried to stall the proceedings by obstructing the movement of vehicles. They relented only when the district Collector, N. Siva Sankar, visited the spot and pacified them. Mr. Dayakar Rao contended that even as farmers were resorting to suicide unable to sustain the losses on account of spurious seed, fertilizers and lack of rainfall, they were deprived of minimum support price by the Government. He accused public representatives and officials of failing to prevail upon the Cotton Coloration of India in coming to the rescue of the distressed farmers. "The prices of seed and fertilizers have gone up by 100 per cent, but the produce of farmers is not commanding enough rate,'' Mr. Dayakar Rao pointed out. The leaders urged the district administration to accord some relaxations with regard to quality and ensure a minimum price of Rs. 2,500 per quintal for cotton. They accused the Congress leaders of failing to represent farmers' issue with the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, during his tour to the district on Monday.
