CHENNAI, NOV. 23 . Four counters had been provided to handle Savings Bank/Savings Certificate transactions in the Anna Nagar post office, the Senior Superintendent of Post Offices of Chennai City North Division, K.J. Andrews, has said. This had been done despite the staff shortage in the division. "We are unable to provide more staff to this post office. However, instructions have been given to the sub postmaster and the assistant sub postmaster to keep watch and open additional counters whenever needed," he said. Savings Bank/Savings Certificate transactions are computerised in Anna Nagar S.O. Mr. Andrews was responding to a letter by Arcot Easwaran, the president of Anna Nagar Citizens' Association about staff shortage at the Anna Nagar Post Office (as appeared in the Readers Mail column on August 16). He added, "I observed the functioning of savings bank/savings certificates counters during my inspection of the post office from Sept. 23 to Oct.1. We have provided four counters for these and other related work. Counter no.1: Savings Bank/Time Deposit; Counter no. 2: NSC/KVP/Senior Citizens' Savings Scheme; Counter 3: MIS/PPF; Counter no. 4: RD/NSS." Mr. Andrews said special counters were provided whenever there was heavy rush. A special counter was opened on October 1 for the Senior Citizen's Savings Scheme.
