By Our Staff Reporter
MADURAI, NOV.23. Hundreds of employees owing allegiance to the Southern Railway Mazdoor Union staged a demonstration in front of the Madurai divisional office here today. Led by the SRMU divisional secretary, R. Kesavan, the employees raised slogans, demanding an interim relief of Rs.1,000 till the implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations. They urged the Ministry of Railways to disburse arrears to the staff after merging the dearness allowance with a basic pay with effect from July 1, 2002. They sought fixation of basic pay for Group C and D employees at Rs.9,000 and Rs.6,000 respectively. They also sought mileage allowance instead of travelling allowance to stationmasters, travelling ticket examiners, air-conditioner mechanics and mechanical amenity staff.
