Remittances

Sir, — When the day for remittances is a holiday, facility is available for remittance the next working day, particularly in the TNEB. But such a facility is not available in the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited. Great hardships such as crowding at the counter are experienced by consumers and it is a strain for BSNL office staff too.

The BSNL can revise the rules for the remittance on the succeeding working day without fine or disconnection.

Right thinking

about one's right

Sir, — When I returned from Chennai to Madurai by the Pandian Express, I was shocked to see a crowd on the first platform stretching a cloth banner of `Tamil Nadu State Government Employees Association,' blocking the passenger traffic and shouting slogans to welcome some VIP of their union, who is also arriving by the same train.

How have the railway authorities permitted such union activities on the platform?

The members of the union should understand that "one's right should not interfere in another's right".

Another thing we wish to bring to the notice of the Madurai railway station authorities is that defacing of the walls of the station near the staircase entrance to the passenger retiring room in the first platform by wall posters of railway unions.

The station is one of the few frequently getting awards for the best maintained station.

We wish this credibility will be maintained by the station authorities with the cooperation of the public as well as the railway staff and their unionists.

Kudos to police

Sir, — The Commissioner and the Deputy Commissioners of Police, Madurai City, deserve all appreciation for the excellent and elaborate security arrangements they made during Deepavali. No major crime has been reported and the people made their purchases with pleasure and peace of mind. Similarly, the ban on entry of lorries in daytime was also appreciated and the public feel that this system should be enforced permanently to ease traffic congestion.

Renovation of Mahal

Sir, — It is good news that the renovation of the Tirumalai Naik Mahal in Madurai is almost over and it is likely to be thrown open for visitors soon. I request the authorities to form parks in the south, west and northern portions of the Mahal with modern illumination, where visitors can sit and relax or walk. Toilets should also be provided and maintained.

Share autos

Sir, — This is with reference to the functioning of share autos on the Madurai-Theni road. Being a low-cost transportation made, share auto is widely popular among the low-income group.

However, at present, the share auto is becoming a dangerous mode of transport because commuters, mostly students, vegetable vendors and senior citizens, are dumped in the vehicle, violating all traffic rules and regulations.

Tickets, which were issued during the early days of this service, are not issued now as the fare is fixed, depending on the demand-and-supply situation. A few normal autos have also made seating arrangements like share autos.

It's time for transport officials to initiate proper action.

For pedestrians

Sir, — Pedestrians strolling along the Gurukulam Road under Asaripallam town panchayat limits in Kanyakumari district are forced to step into either side of the roadways when vehicles whiz past them. Since both sides of the roadways are overgrown with mass of shrubs and bushes in the wake of the current monsoon, pedestrians often run the risk of being bitten by poisonous reptiles hiding under the tickets.

Will the authorities initiate steps to clear the undergrowth at the earliest?

Traffic congestion

Sir, — The roundtana at Vannarpettai in Tirunelveli is disproportionate to the size of the road. Buses and vehicles coming from all directions find it difficult to negotiate the roundtana curves.

Moreover, the traffic signal (manual) has not been synchronised. Vehicles getting green signal at one curve are stopped immediately at the next curve by red signal. It causes a traffic congestion.

Let the traffic authorities take right measure.

V. Kanthimathynathan,

Tirunelveli.

Issue of ration cards

Sir, — Ration cards are now assuming greater relevance in many ways other than what they were originally intended for. In short, it is a basic record to prove oneself as a citizen of India. The production of family card is sought to establish one's residential address for getting passport, licence for starting a business and loans under hire purchase scheme.

The present cards were issued some six years ago. Many changes may have occurred in a family due to the marriage of any member of the family or new arrivals in the family. Many people are experiencing immense difficulties for non-inclusion of their names in the cards.

Hence, the need for periodical review and issue of fresh cards.

N. Kasilingam,

Tuticorin.
