THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 23. The Vigilance & Anti Corruption Bureau has started investigating a case of amassment of wealth which was filed against the former Deputy Excise Commissioner A.K. Balan in the Special Court here in 1998. A Vigilance team had conducted a search on Mr. Balan's house in Thiruvananthapuram on April 21, 1998. According to the first investigation report (FIR), the accused had amassed assets worth Rs.5.42 lakhs which were disproportionate to his known sources of income during the period between June 1980 and February 1998. Mr. Balan, who was under suspension, retired recently. His service records have now been seized in connection with the investigation.
