THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 23. There was a time when the Sahitya Akademi, (the National Academy of Letters, India), was known to cater to only seasoned writers and that too, those in their sixties and seventies. According to writer K. Satchidanandan, its secretary, the Akademi too has changed with the changing times. Now the young and budding writers are also being provided opportunities to express themselves and to interact with the others of that ilk as well as well as with the lovers of literature. The programme called `Mulakat' is the forum on which they come together, for poetry reading, short story rendering and also discussion on their works. It is also intended as a source of encouragement to the new generation of writers, many of them yet to publish their maiden literary work. One such programme was conducted here by the Akademi on Tuesday evening. Welcoming the participants and the audience was none other than Satchidanandan, who was of the opinion that short story is the most vibrant branch of Malayalam literature at present. There were presentations in three different languages by three writers: Thomas Joseph in Malayalam; Lakshmi Rajeev in English and Yuma Vasuki, representing Tamil. `Yuma Vasuki' is the pen name of Marimuthu, a Tamil youth, who has published a novel and several collections of short stories as well as poems. Lakshmi Rajeev, yet to publish a work of hers, has been writing poems in English since 2001. A freelance journalist and columnist, Lakshmi Rajeev has translated into English some of the poems of O.N.V. Kurup. There are three collections of short stories to the credit of Thomas Joseph.
