NEW DELHI, NOV. 23. Claiming to revolutionise the manner in which the Capital's power consumers are metered and charged, the private distribution company BSES today announced introduction of new automatic meter reading (AMR) technology, the first of its kind to be used by a power company in Asia. The company has already extended the AMR facility to nearly 1,500 high value consumers who have more than 100 kw energy load. According to a BSES announcement explaining the new scheme, the meter at the consumer premises is fitted through a cable with a Global System of Mobile (GSM) based modem. Integrated software at the server located in the BSES office in Nehru Place would take the meter reading through this modern technique by way of a remote sensing microwave link. The meter then would push the data through the communication link and thus remote reading is completed without any intervention. The company claimed that AMR minimises the human element in recording power usage and consumption thereby eliminating the scope for the sort of widespread harassment faced by consumers at the hands of unscrupulous meter readers. It would also deal with the complaints of inflated utility bills. Besides, this technology enables the consumers to manage their consumption and load patterns, thus saving power. Noting that faulty and inaccurate meter reading has been a recurring complaint in the Capital, the company said the introduction of AMR would help root out such inaccuracies. It would also lead to a more optimal running of the distribution network and lead to increased reliability of power for the consumers.
