Stir threatened over new bank examination norms

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, NOV. 23. Expressing alarm at changes announced in the minimum qualification for appearing at the Bank Probationary Officers examination by some nationalised banks, a section of the student population has threatened to launch an agitation if a rollback is not announced soon.

As against the earlier minimum required qualification of just graduation, nationalised banks such as the State Bank of India, Andhra Bank, Punjab National Bank and the Union Bank of India have asked for a minimum of 60 or 65 per cent marks from candidates wanting to apply.

In a statement, the students point out that the last advertisement issued by Andhra Bank in Employment news dated March 22, 2003, had only graduation as the minimum eligibility, and they had prepared accordingly for the exam. "But in the recent Employment News dated 13 November this year, 60 per cent has been fixed as the minimum qualification. PNB is adopting similar procedures,'' the students said in their statement.

"As such, lakhs of candidates across the nation have been rendered ineligible for appearing in the Probationary Officers exams. For instance, in the previous exams conducted by SBI three lakh students used to appear in the written test. But this time only 17,000 candidates have applied,'' the students points out.

While pointing out that the courses of studies, process of exams and evaluation of answer scripts vary from university to university, they say that " in such a situation it is impractical to judge the talent of graduates of all the universities on the same scale. If any student does well in matriculation and intermediate exams but gets less marks in graduation, will it not be unjust to close the door of opportunity for him?''

Asking the banks to consider their cases on humanitarian grounds for the greater interest of the community, the students have threatened to go on an agitation if the banks refuse to revert to the old scheme.
