Axe to fall on 20,000 trees

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, NOV. 23. Clearing the decks for massive expansion of Anand Vihar railway station, the Delhi Government today gave permission to Northern Railway to cut 20,720 trees on a 40-hectare patch adjoining the sprawling station in East Delhi. The railway authorities have been asked to plant 10 times more trees they will cut over the next one-year period.

According to sources in the Delhi Government, the Forest Department had examined the request of the railway authorities and had decided to grant permission for cutting of trees on such a large scale keeping in mind the importance of the project. The expansion of Anand Vihar railway station gains importance especially now in view of the recent stampede at New Delhi railway station where overcrowding led to the death of five passengers. The Anand Vihar railway station is being expanded in order to decongest the other main railway terminals in the Capital and ensure that major East-bound trains arrive and depart from here.

According to the authorities, in the first phase 15,400 trees would be cut over the next six months. Till December this year, 4,464 trees would be chopped and by May next year 7,665 trees would be cut. In the second phase, another 3,333 trees would be chopped and the entire exercise would be completed in three phases. Officials informed that Northern Railway had identified 92.66 hectares across 25 locations along railway lines and other strategic locations to plant trees to compensate for their chopping. Sources said apart from planting trees along the Delhi-Ambala section, Delhi-Rohtak routes and on Ring Railway line, it had also identified railway line routes along Tughlakabad and Hazrat Nizamuddin for planting of trees.

Apart from this, areas around Old Yamuna Bridge, Pragati Maidan, Nangloi, Chanakyapuri Railway Museum, IOC Oil Depot at Sakurbasti, Bhairon Marg have been identified by the Delhi Government for carrying out massive tree plantation. The decision to take up plantation on railway land and along lines was taken due to shortage of land in the Capital for development as forest area. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is already developing thick forest areas in various parts of the Capital in order to compensate for the loss of trees due to its upcoming project. Sources said with clearance being granted for cutting of trees, work on expansion of the Anand Vihar railway station would get impetus.
