VIJAYAWADA, NOV.23. A 20-year-old MCA student, Y. Vamsi, of Siddhartha Engineering College, died under suspicious circumstances at a corporate hospital on Nakkal Road during the early hours of Tuesday. However, Vamsi's family members held the hospital staff responsible for the death and lodged a complaint with the police.

Bandh call

Meanwhile, the city unit of the Indian Medical Association announced at a press conference that hospitals would observe bandh on Thursday to protest against "the assault'' on the hospital staff .

Vamsi, who was suffering from pneumonia, was admitted to the hospital last night. However, on Tuesday around 1.30 a.m., when his condition deteriorated, he was allegedly administered some medicines and given a massage by nurses and some para-medical staff in the Intensive Care Unit. The family members alleged that Vamsi was unauthorisedly given the massage and medicine as there was no duty doctor around.

When the youth's uncle, Y. Anand, reportedly tried to gain entry into the ICU, an altercation ensued between him and the hospital staff. They alleged that they were assaulted by Mr. Anand and another family member and also claimed that the glass door of the ICU and half-a-dozen flower pots were broken by irate family members.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police, S.M. Vali, rushed to the place and shifted the body for post mortem.

Dharna staged

After the post-mortem, Some 40-50 students of Siddhartha College carried the body in an ambulance and staged a dharna in front of the hospital.

However, the IMA president, P. Venkateswarlu, and other office-bearers strongly condemned "the attack" on hospital staff . They said they would take up the issue with the City Police Commissioner and the District Collector.

The IMA lodged a complaint against Anand and another family member.
