VISAKHAPATNAM, NOV. 23. The inordinate delay in making the Justice Vaman Rao Commission to begin its inquiry against the Andhra University Vice-Chancellor, Y.C. Simhadri, is leading to suspicion that the Government is not sincere in this regard, feels the Joint Action Committee for Protection of AU. ``It has been 253 days since we launched our agitation and 45 days since the Government ordered the probe. But there is no development since then. Announcing the inquiry committee looks like a delaying tactic on the part of Government,'' the JAC convener and a dismissed professor, S. Surappadu, told a press conference here on Tuesday. The JAC urged the Government to ensure that the Vaman Rao Commission begin its inquiry without any delay and also to submit its report well before Prof. Simhadri completed his term (in April next). It would intensify its agitation if the Government failed to make the inquiry commence soon.
Demand renewed
Prof. Surappadu renewed the JAC's demand that the Government send Prof. Simhadri on leave or suspend him because there was a likelihood of his tampering with the records and evidence. It was also regrettable that the Government was keeping quiet even though Prof. Simhadri was challenging it in the context of autonomy. A former MLA and a dismissed Reader of AU, Pinniti Varalakshmi, lamented that the Chief Minister had failed to keep his promise of solving the problems of AU. Ordering an inquiry seemed to be an eyewash and an act to fool the people, she said. Dr. Varalakshmi regretted that some Ministers were trying to prevent the Chief Minister from taking any action against the V-C though a good number of MLAs submitted petitions against him. She warned the Government that the JAC would intensify its agitation if the inquiry did not commence by November-end.
