DAVANGERE, NOV. 24. A.B. Parvathamma, president of the Davangere Zilla Panchayat, has said that a system should be developed to ensure that developments arising from research in agriculture reach farmers. Inaugurating a workshop on the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) in paddy cultivation at Kadajji village on Tuesday, Ms. Parvathamma said that not many farmers were aware of the SRI method, which was cost effective and provided a higher yield. Also the system was less water intensive than traditional methods of paddy cultivation, she said. She urged the farmers to adopt the new method and increase the yield of their paddy crops. She also asked the agricultural officers to educate farmers about the new method immediately. The chief executive officer of the zilla panchayat, Narayanaswamy, said that despite the rapid growth in population, India had achieved self-sufficiency in food production owing to the green revolution. He urged farmers to keep abreast with the developments in agriculture and adopt the new techniques. Shivalingaiah, chairman of the standing committee of the zilla panchayat, said that farmers had faced a number of problems due to the drought in the last three years. This year too, the paddy crop had been affected by the brown plant-hopper disease, he said. Shivamurthappa, joint director of the Agriculture Department welcomed the gathering.
