BELGAUM, NOV. 24. K.L.E. Society's Foundation Day and its hospital and medical research centre's Annual Day were celebrated at a function here on Tuesday. In a press release, M.V. Jali, medical director and chief executive of the centre, recounted some of the milestones in the history of the society and the hospital. He recalled that the President, A.P.J. Kalam, inaugurated a dharmashala and a spiral CT scan unit in the presence of the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, on October 15. Eminent cardiologist and surgeon M.D. Dixit had been honoured with the Rajyotsava Award this year, which was in recognition of his service to people, Dr. Jali said. Dr. Dixit and his team performed over 950 heart surgeries during the past one year, he added. Dr. Jali said the hospital had state-of-the-art facilities and was the only one of its kind in north Karnataka, south Maharashtra and Goa. It had treated 18,500 inpatients and 1,15,000 outpatients in the past year, he added. With the opening of a ward for the poor early this year, over 5,000 patients were treated free of cost, Dr. Jali said. Over 1,600 free surgeries were conducted during the period, including 500 cataract surgeries. In addition, 2,000 children were operated for cleft lip and palate with support from the U.S.-based NGO "Smile Train," he added. The hospital was also involved in public awareness programmes and it had organised seminars, workshops and free health check-up camps, he said. A "Diabetes Friends Club" floated a few months ago was working towards creating awareness about the disease among the people, Dr. Jali added.
