Letters to the Editor
Sir, The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh's announcement of a Rs.24,000-crore economic package for Kashmir will work wonders if implemented properly. However, Kashmir needs much more than a package. New Delhi should address the issue of the alienation of the Kashmiris from the Indian state.
Sir, It is premature to expect any significant fallout from the Centre's move of reducing troops in Jammu and Kashmir, though it will give India an edge in the negotiations with Pakistan. As for the domestic impact, the responsibility of the Mufti Mohammed Sayeed Government will be more in tackling infiltration in the Valley. Improving infrastructure, reducing unemployment, and bringing the alienated youth to the mainstream should be the top priorities.
