LONDON, NOV. 24. The long-awaited motion by some Opposition MPs to impeach the Prime Minister Tony Blair for leading the country to war with Iraq on a false pretext made some headway on Wednesday when it was included in the Commons' order paper but there was no indication when, or if at all, it would be debated. Whether it would be debated would depend on the discretion of the Speaker's office. Twenty-three backbench MPs, led by Adam Price of Plaid Cymru, the Welsh party, have signed a motion calling for a parliamentary inquiry into Mr. Blair's conduct over Iraq, particularly his Government's intelligence claims that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction which he could deploy within 45 minutes. "What we are seeking to do is to decide as Parliament whether Tony Blair is a fit person to hold that [Prime Minister's] post,'' Jenny Tonge of the Liberal Democrat Party said. Officially, neither the Conservatives nor the Lib. Dems. are supporting the motion though individual MPs from both parties have signed it. Mr. Blair's supporters dismissed it as a political stunt.
