BANGALORE, NOV. 24. Seventeen-year-old H.D. Nagaraj, who dropped out of the pre-university course, wanted to become an electrician but did not know how. For the last one year, he was roaming the streets of his village in Shiggaon taluk of Haveri district. Opportunity came his way in the form of a training offer by the Skills Training Centre of Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation Ltd. (KSPHC). That he was the youngest of the five children of his father, a constable in Shiggaon Police Station, helped him grab the opportunity. He now has a professional certificate after getting trained in electrical works and a tool kit. "I had an interest in doing electrical works since my childhood. Getting professionally trained in this work will help me to continue my interest and be self-reliant. The money that I earn will be an additional source of income for our family," said Nagaraj. The same was the feeling of Syed Gafar and Sanjeev Kumar. All of them were the children of policemen. They were among the 34 students trained for four months by the centre in bar bending, plumbing and electrical works. This was the second batch of students trained at the centre formed to impart skills to the children of policemen in trades required in the construction industry. The centre was formed in 2002 based on the model of a similar training school run in Chennai by the construction company, Larsen and Toubro.
Effort lauded
S. Mariswamy, Commissioner of Police, lauded the effort of KSPHC in training the children of policemen. Policemen, he said, found very little time to devote to their children. The training here, he said, would help the students maintain quality in construction work. R. Sri Kumar, Chairman and Managing Director of KSPHC, said the centre would impart values and skills necessary in the construction industry. "This will help them to be self-reliant and to earn their livelihood," he said.
