KANNUR, NOV. 24. The Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samiti (KVVES) district unit will begin its three-day vehicle campaign jatha from November 25 as part of the Samiti's State-wide agitation against implementing the value-added tax (VAT). Addressing a press conference here today, the KVVES district president, Devassya Mecheri, and the general secretary, C.P. Moidu, said the campaign the district would be conducted by five teams headed by Samiti's office-bearers. The KVVES would also organise a collectorate march on December 1 and send over 250 merchants to participate in the Parliament march against VAT in New Delhi on December 15 and 16.
`Imperialist idea'
Terming VAT as an imperialist idea born in the U.S., they said that the three-tier compensation package offered by the Union Government to neutralise any possible revenue loss to the States after implementing VAT had prompted the State Government to replace the existing sales tax regime by VAT. It remains to be seen how the package would be practical in the backdrop of the State Government's grievances that the State was not getting its tax share from the Union Government.
