KAU postpones Ph.D. interviews

By Our Staff Reporter

THRISSUR, NOV. 24. The Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) has decided to postpone the interviews for selecting the Ph.D. students, scheduled for Friday, in view of the ongoing `non-cooperation agitation' by the teachers.

The Vice-Chancellor, K.V. Peter, told The Hindu that there are 42 seats for the Ph.D. students and about 100 students were to appear for the interview. The teachers in the university are on an agitation challenging some of the decisions of the State Government on the UGC pay scales.

Dr. Peter said the University would conduct the entrance examination for the post-graduate courses under various disciplines on Thursday as per the schedule. There are 139 post-graduate seats in the University and more than 500 students, including many from other States, were expected to attend the examination. The entrance test was normally held in August but it had to be postponed this year because of the non-cooperation of the teachers.

Teachers' demand

The teachers had demanded the University to postpone the examination this time also. But the University authorities did not oblige as the examination had already been delayed, Dr. Peter said. The top officials of the university such as the Deans and Directors with the help of the non-teaching staff would now conduct the entrance test, he said. The teachers have agreed not to obstruct the conduct of the test. The University had to postpone the Ph.D. interviews as the teachers who are the heads of various departments will have to be members of the selection committees.

Canteen for girls

Dr. Peter promised the students that the University would make arrangements for transporting the girls staying in hostel to the university canteen for dinner in view of the ongoing agitation of the mess workers. He said the girl students were given permission for self-cooking in the hostel. The mess workers are on strike demanding that they be made permanent employees of the University.
