TUMKUR, NOV. 24. Jyoti Prakash Mirji, chief of the Karnataka Special Task Force, has disputed a statement by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa, in the Legislative Assembly that Karnataka had no role in the killing of Veerappan. Mr. Mirji was speaking at a function organised by Tumkur Nagarika Sanmana Samiti here on Tuesday to felicitate 39 policemen from the district who served in the STF at different times. Mr. Mirji, who is also from Tumkur district, said that three of the eight platoons of policemen that participated in the operation on the day Veerappan was killed were from the Karnataka STF, and asserted that the contribution of the State STF could not be belittled although it was the Tamil Nadu STF that was involved in the shootout. Mr. Mirji said that his predecessors in the State STF had weakened Veerappan by reducing the number of his followers to a single digit. "Our policemen patrolled the forest areas at night in batches of five and kept a close watch on the brigand's movements. Our men walked barefoot to avoid leaving behind footprints," he said. S. Mallikarjunaiah, Tumkur MP; K.N.Rajanna, Bellavi MLA; H. Ningappa, Kunigal MLA; Veereshananda Saraswati of Sri Ramakrishna-Vivekananda Ashram; and Shivakumara Swami of Siddaganga Math felicitated the STF personnel. Mr. Mirji's parents, B.P. Gangadhar, advocate and former Tumkur MLA, and Shantakumari, and the STF chief's wife were also honoured. S. Shivanna, Tumkur MLA, presided over the function. N.R. Jagadish, president of the samiti, welcomed the gathering, and C.G. Rishikesh, its convenor, proposed a vote of thanks. The audience largely comprised schoolchildren and college students.
