Many in race for KERC post

Bangalore Nov. 24. The number of candidates for the post of Chairman of the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has increased. The first chairman, Philipose Mathai, retired on November 14 though he was in office till November 16. Mr. Mathai had told presspersons here earlier this month that one of the two members — S. D. Ukkali (Member-Technical) or H.S. Subramanya (Member-Finance) — could be "chairman in-charge" till a new appointee took over. Now, reports have it that senior IAS officers, especially those on the verge of retirement, "are lobbying for the post." Names doing the rounds are those of S.S. Meenakshi Sundaram, a retired IAS officer, C. Gopal Reddy, a former Additional Chief Secretary, and K.P. Pandey, Principal Secretary (Finance). Others whose names figure prominently are M.B. Prakash, former Additional Chief Secretary, and J. Vasudevan, a retired IAS officer. Last month, the Government set up a search committee comprising the retired judge A.J. Sadashiva, the Chairman of the Central Electricity Authority, H.L. Bajaj, and the Chief Secretary, K. K. Misra. They fixed November 10 as the last date for officials to submit applications to the post of chairman. According to reports, there have been 51 applicants. The appointment of chairman has reportedly been taking time because of the delay in the Ministry expansion.

Tumkur police arrest three

TUMKUR NOV. 24. The police arrested three persons at Kadamalakunte in Pavagada taluk of Tumkur district early today on the charge that they had links with a naxalite group. The police said the arrested persons were wanted in several cases. The names of the arrested persons were given as Kadamalakunte Gopala, M.C. Palli Nagabhushana (alias Booshigadu), and Yapakunte Venkataramana. A gun and four country-made bombs were seized from them, the police said. The arrested persons had been accused of robbing a person who was driving a vehicle at Nagalapura, and another at Thimmanahalli, when they were with the Rangareddy dalam, a breakaway group of the People's War. The police said the three persons later left the Rangareddy dalam to join the Venkatesh group (MCC dalam) and were accused of committing burning a bus at Pendlijivi and burning a cinema at Pavagada. The Superintendent of Police, P. Muniswamy, has announced cash prizes to O.B. Kalleshappa, police inspector, and his team for arresting the three persons.

Delegation to meet Manmohan

Bangalore Nov. 24. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, said here today that a delegation would be taken to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, to urge him to accord classical language status on Kannada. The Chief Minister said this while talking to presspersons. Mr. Dharam Singh said that he would hold talks with naxalite outfits in Chikmagalur district once the political problems (Ministry expansion) were overcome. Maintaining that the naxalite problem could be solved only through social change and not through the bullet, he said that the Government would come out with a rehabilitation package for backward areas that were prone to naxalite movements. The administration had received a report on the rehabilitation proposal, he added.

Seminar on Kuvempu's works

New Delhi Nov. 24. The Dehali Karnataka Sangha has organised a two-day seminar on the writings of Jnanpith Award winner, K.V. Puttappa, on November 27 and 28 to observe the centenary of the writer. The seminar is being organised to introduce the writer, who has made his contribution in every form of literature — poetry, drama and novels — in his literary career and as a teacher at Mysore University, to the outside world, the sangha president, Purushothama Bilimale, said. The event will be inaugurated by the noted Malayalam writer and Sahitya Academy Secretary, K. Sachidanandan, by unveiling the portrait of Kuvempu, who died in November 1994 at the age of 90. K.D. Paliwal of the Hindi Department of Delhi University would be the chief guest while the Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University, Chidananda Gowda, would preside over the function. Others participants in the seminar, being held in collaboration with Kuvempu and Hampi Kannada universities, include Pradhan Gurudutt, Thippeswamy, T.V. Kattimani, Kashinath Ambalagi, Ram Prakash, maresh Nugadoni and about 20 scholars in Tamil, Punjabi, Urdu, Marathi, and Bengali literature. — UNI

Ceremony inaugurated

BELLARY NOV. 24. Sri Sushmeendra Teertha Swamiji of the Raghavendra Swamy Math in Mantralaya started the "Trikoti Narayanashtakshara mantra sahita koti Gayatri mantra japa homa" organised by the Sri Madhwa Sangha, Bellary, at Satyanarayanpet here today. The seer urged parents to ensure that children learnt the "Gayatri mantra."

Vidwan Pushkaracharya, Udupi Krishnacharya, underlined the religious importance of the "homa."

"Poornahuti" of the homa would be conducted on November 28 by Anandateerthachar from Bangalore. Hundreds of devotees participated in the inauguration of the function. Venkatesh Joshi, president of the sangha, welcomed the gathering. Vijayasimha, secretary, proposed a vote of thanks.

Pedestrian dies

HASSAN NOV. 24. One pedestrian was killed when a van ran over him near Gejjenahalli in Channarayapatna taluk. According to the police, Amase Gowda (45), who waiting for a bus, was run over by the vehicle which was reportedly overtaking a bus. The Channarayaptna police have registered a case.

Protest

HASSAN NOV. 24. The volunteers of Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat stormed the zilla panchayat office here on Wednesday protesting against the alleged apathy of the authorities concerned in solving problems faced by students in the hostels run by the Department of Social Welfare.

They submitted a memorandum to the chief executive officer, R.F. Jamadar, in this regard.

Woman killed

Raichur Nov. 24. Parvathamma (60), wife of Veerabhadrappa, was killed on the spot when a lorry hit her while she was crossing a road on the Manvi-Raichur Raod near Kapgal village on Tuesday.

A case has been registered at the Manvi Police Station.

Award

GULBARGA Nov. 24. The secretary of the District Youth Congress, Bheemreddy Patil Kurkunda, has won the Indira Gandhi National Seva Ratna Award instituted by the Bangalore-based Indira Gandhi Grameena Abviruddi Mathu Mahila Abviruddi Samasthe.

The awards will be given away at a function in Bangalore on November 29, a release said.

Accident

Raichur Nov. 24. Two persons died on the spot and another was injured when a vehicle in which they were travelling collided with a lorry on National Highway 13 near Vangeri village of Kustagi taluk in Koppal district on Tuesday.

The police gave the names of the victims as Upendra and Raghunanadan. Jayaram, who was injured in the incident, has been admitted to the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences, Hubli. The police said that the accident occurred when the victims, who were from Bijapur, were returning after attending a wedding at Hospet. The Kustagi Police have registered a case.

Fire at factory in Karwar

KARWAR NOV. 24. A fire broke out at the "phosphoric acid B unit" of Solaris Chemtech Ltd. at Binaga around 6.30 p.m. today. Fire tenders were rushed to the spot to extinguish the fire.

Thousand of people gathered near the main gate of the factory. The Deputy Commissioner visited the site.

No casualty was reported.

Arrested

Raichur Nov. 24. The Manvi police on Tuesday arrested 31 persons — Amarappa and 10 others from Sangapur village and Basawaraj and 19 persons from Pothnal village — for allegedly indulging in gambling and recovered Rs. 21,555 in cash from them. They have been remanded in judicial custody. Two cases have been registered at the Manvi Police Station.

Training

Bidar Nov. 24. A one-day training programme in breeding techniques and health and hygiene of sheep and goats will be conducted for sheep-rearers of Bidar on Thursday.

The Karnataka Sheep and Wool Development Corporation and the Department of Animal Husbandry are organising the programme.

Metro Cash and Carry India is funding the programme. Those interested may assemble at the Indian Medical Association Hall in Bidar at 9 a.m., a release said.

Anniversary

Bidar Nov. 24. The 535th birth anniversary celebrations of Sri Guru Nanak will be held at the Gurudwara Guru Nanak Jhira Saheb in Bidar on Friday. Devotees from Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh will participate in the celebrations.

The highlight of the occasion will be the "Janam Juloos" at 3 p.m. Other religious rituals and Guru Ka Langer will also be held, a release from Balbir Singh, president of the Sri Gurudwara Prabhandak Committee, said.

Baby show

MYSORE Nov. 24. The Mysore chapters of Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the Indian Academy of Paediatrics are organising a "Well Baby Show'' at the IMA Hall, Sayyaji Rao Road, Mysore, on Friday.

The competition will be held in three categories. While children up to age one are in category one, children aged between one and two are in category two. The third category will comprise children in the two to three age group.

The show is being organised in association with the baby care company, Johnson & Johnson. Parents can register the names of their children on Ph: 2421628 on Thursday.

Magic show

MYSORE Nov. 24. Lions Club of Mysore, Indiranagar, will organise a magic show, "Gili Gili Magic'', by Shankar and Junior Shankar from Shankar Jadoo Jagath, Udupi, at the Jaganmohan Palace Auditorium in Mysore on Friday. The two-hour show is being organised as part of the club's fund raising programme for service activities, according to a statement from the club's president, K.S. Rai.

Foodgrains

Chamarajanagar Nov. 24. The Deputy Commissioner, Harsh Gupta, has said 3,700 quintals of foodgrains have been released to gram panchayats under the SGSY Special Unit Scheme to take up works in the drought-hit areas in Chamarajanagar district. In a release here on Wednesday, he said each gram panchayat would get 100 quintals of foodgrains and they would be utilised only for taking up canal works, trench works and water protection works. He had instructed the gram panchayat secretaries to make arrangements to store foodgrains within a week.
