France takes 2-0 lead

MOSCOW, NOV. 24. Nathalie Dechy eased to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Maria Sanchez Lorenzo to give Fed Cup champion France a commanding 2-0 lead in its semifinal against Spain today.

Earlier, Tatiana Golovin, making her singles debut in the competition, beat Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-3, 6-3 to give an under-strength French team the early advantage.

Hot favourite Russia took a 1-0 lead against Austria in the second semifinal.

With World No. 2 Amelie Mauresmo and 2000 French Open champion Mary Pierce, who led France to a second Fed Cup title a year ago in Moscow, missing this year's tie, 16-year-old Golovin was left to carry her country's hopes.

Moscow-born Golovin finally held serve in the ninth game to take the opening set 6-3.

In the second set, she earned a decisive break in the fifth game before wrapping up the match after 94 minutes.

The results: France 2, Spain 0 (Nathalie Dechy bt Maria Sanchez Lorenzo 6-2, 6-4; Tatiana Golovin bt Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-3, 6-3).

Russia 1, Austria 0 (Svetlana Kuznetsova bt Yvonnes Meusburger 6-1, 6-1).
