Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, NOV. 24. A 22-year-old man whose genitals were damaged in a freak accident at work one year ago, has made a full recovery. Doctors at the Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) where he underwent treatment proclaimed him `fit' and now he is all set for a trek to Sabarimala. "I am back to normal," he told reporters at a press conference here. Last October, the youth's lungi got caught in the rotating shaft of a water aerator at the prawn hatchery where he worked, resulting in the loss of both testes. However, a team of doctors led by Abraham Thomas, head of Plastic, Reconstructive and Microsurgery, PIMS, which attended on him for over a year, said: "The traumatic castration of this nature, if left untreated, would result in feminisation of the patient, besides the sexual and psychological trauma that he had to undergo. Hence we decided to go for a novel microsurgical procedure." In an intricate procedure, an insertion was made in the left forearm and the testis in good condition was planted inside. This was to preserve it and also to use the blood vessels from the forearm for later use. The genital wounds surrounding the testicles were covered by a skin graft. Last month the testis was restored in a six-hour operation, said Dr Abraham. Recent tests showed that the young man had made a full recovery and has normal levels of testosterone. Surgery of this sort is possible if the patient is medically attended to within 6 hours, he further added. In a year from now, the institute plans to increase its bed capacity to 500 from the present 450, besides setting up two more operation theatres, R. K. Kalyan Singh, Medical Superintendent, said.
