PONDICHERRY, NOV. 24 . The Pondicherry Government has sought Rs. 18.33 crores from the Centre as crop damage compensation to farmers, the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, said today. Mr. Rangasamy told presspersons that in the Pondicherry region alone, paddy, tapioca and vegetables worth Rs. 8.23 crores had been lost. In Karaikal, paddy worth Rs. 5.23 crores had been damaged. The Government has decided to give, from its funds, compensation of Rs.2, 500 a hectare for the 7,203 hectares of samba crop lost in Pondicherry. In Karaikal, Rs. 3,750 will be paid out for a hectare of 6,060 hectares samba and thaladi crops lost. Mr. Rangasamy said the rain had damaged vegetables grown on 220 hectares, and every farmer would be paid Rs. 3,750 a hectare. Tapioca farmers would be given Rs. 10,000 a hectare for damaged crop on 116 hectares. The compensation would be paid from a special corpus of Rs. 3 crores set up by the Government to meet emergencies, pending assistance from the Union Government.
