BANGALORE, NOV. 24. Southern Railway, Chennai, staged a remarkable comeback to score a 22-25, 24-26, 26-24, 25-15, 15-11 win over Western Railway, Mumbai in the women's section of the National Volleyball League (preliminary) championship at Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium courts here on Wednesday. The Chennai side, with an all-win record, got a berth in the Super League. Western Railway needed straight-set win to gain a spot in the Super League, but the team, after wresting the first two sets, faltered from the third set. The Mumbai players committed a lot of unforced errors and Southern Railway spikers took full advantage of the confusion to return back to the game. Internationals Shiji Kurien, Geetha Raju and Gayathri excelled for Southern Railway with their aggressive game. Western Railway seemed lost the direction after losing a closely-fought third game at 24-26. From then onwards, there was no stopping for Southern Railway. In the men's section, Bangalore City Club inflicted a 3-2 defeat on Karnataka State Police, while ITI, Bangalore defeated Income Tax, Hyderabad 3-1. Bangalore City Club won 25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-8 to finish fifth. ITI won 20-25, 25-21, 29-27, 25-20 and finished third. Kochi Refineries Limited (KRL), Kochi quelled the challenge of Indian Overseas bank (Chennai) 29-31, 25-21, 19-25, 25-15, 16-14 in 105 minutes.
