NEW DELHI, NOV. 24. A 27-year-old man and an alleged woman accomplice of his have been arrested by the West Delhi police on charges of trying to extort Rs. 1 crore from a Kirti Nagar resident. A country-made firearm and a scooter used to commit the offence have been seized. On November 18, Mahinder Singh contacted the police alleging that he had received a call in which the caller demanded Rs.1 crore as "protection money". He called up again an hour later and asked if Mahinder had decided to cough up the amount. Acting on the complaint, the police registered a case. They tracked down the calls to a public booth and upon questioning its owner zeroed in on one Maninderjit Singh, who had previous involvements in six theft cases. He had come out of jail on November 10. The police arrested him this Monday. During interrogation, Maninderjit revealed that in jail he met a criminal, Ramesh, who gave him the idea of making quick buck through extortion. Maninderjit contacted his friend, Rajni, who tipped him off about her neighbour, Mahinder Singh. Lured by the prospect of making huge money, Maninderjit first opened fire outside Mahinder's house to scare him and then made the extortion calls.
