Don't belittle STF role: Mirji

By Our Staff Correspondent

TUMKUR, NOV. 24. Jyoti Prakash Mirji, chief of the Karnataka Special Task Force, has disputed a statement by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa, in the Legislative Assembly that Karnataka had no role in the killing of forest brigand Veerappan.

Mr. Mirji was speaking at a function organised by Tumkur Nagarika Sanmana Samiti here on Tuesday to felicitate 39 policemen from the district who served in the STF at different times. Mr. Mirji, who is also from Tumkur district, said three of the eight platoons of policemen that participated in the operation on the day Veerappan was killed were from the Karnataka STF, and asserted that the contribution of the State STF could not be belittled although it was the Tamil Nadu STF that was involved in the shootout.

Mr. Mirji said his predecessors had weakened Veerappan by reducing his followers.
