KOZHIKODE, NOV. 24. The police arrested five supporters of the Indian Union Muslim League at Kootai, near Tirur, in Malappuram district today, in connection with separate incidents of attacks on the police and houses of CPI(M) men. The arrests were made by a police party headed by the Tirur Circle inspector. Earlier in the day [at 8 a.m.], the police had come to Kootai to arrest two persons allegedly involved in the attack on houses of CPI(M) sympathisers on Monday. A 25-member gang of Muslim League supporters allegedly threw stones at the police party and set free the two men whom the police had arrested. The Tirur sub-inspector, Ashok Kumar, and the constables of the Armed Reserve Camp at Malappuram M.S. Rajesh and T.N. Tulasidas were injured in the incident. The arrested, Shibal, Manas, Zacharia, Salam and Rafi, include the two who had been rounded up earlier by the police.
