PALAKKAD, NOV. 24. As many as 51 cases of acute diarrhoea were reported from different hospitals in the district today. Among them, 18 persons were admitted to the district hospital and the Alathur taluk hospital. A large number of people were admitted to various hospitals in Palakkad, Alathur and Kuzhalmannam with acute diarrhoea in the last few days. The District Medical Officer (DMO), A.K. Radhakrishnan, told The Hindu that there was no need for panic since the number of cases had now come down. There were only 18 admissions today and seven of them were found to be cholera cases. No death has been reported from anywhere in the district, he said. He said the main reason for the spread of the disease was the use of contaminated canal and well water. Water is being released from the Malampuzha dam to canals for paddy cultivation. This water got contaminated by the waste and polluted water drained into the canal. The use of this water without filtering or boiling has resulted in the outbreak of diarrhoea in areas where the canal passes through. The DMO said the authorities had taken preventive measures in the affected areas. Wells in the area are being chlorinated.
