Fined for violation of ESI norms

HYDERABAD: Two employers -- Sree Krishna Grinding Mills, Cuddapah, and Hotel Mourya, Hyderabad -- have been fined Rs. 3,000 each by the first class judicial magistrate, Hyderabad, for non-compliance of the ESI Act.

N. Gopalakrishnaiah, Deputy Director, ESIC, Andhra Pradesh regional office, has said in a press release that they are among the six employers convicted for non-payment of ESI contribution and non-submission of return of the contribution. The other employers are: M/s Rontronics, Secunderabad (fined Rs.1,000), M/s Komala Vilas, Guntur (Rs. 500), M/s Rex-0-Knits Ltd, Medak (Rs.1,000) and Hotel Birla Bhavan (Rs.1,500).

He appealed to employers to comply with the Act in the time stipulated to avoid legal action.

Website to seek NRI funds

for schools' development

Sangareddy: To raise funds for infrastructural development of Government schools, the School Education Ministry will soon launch a website seeking donations from Non-Resident Indians.

The Minister for School Education, N. Rajyalakshmi, said this at a press conference here on Wednesday. She pointed out that the department had left with only 10 per cent of the allocated budget after paying for the salary expenses.

To provide basic facilities in schools, a separate cell had been opened to concentrate on NRI funds. She denied of any confrontation between her and teachers unions.

Disposal of medical

negligence cases

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission disposed of 168 of the 223 medical negligence cases filed since 1989 up to the end of October this year. It decided 47 cases in favour of the consumer and 97 against. Twenty-our of the cases were disposed of under `technical reasons' which meant that they had to be decided by the district fora concerned.

According to statistics prepared by the commission, a maximum of 25 cases were filed during 2001, 19 in 1993, 18 each in 1999 and 1994, 17 in 1998, 16 each in 2002, 2000 and 1995 and 13 in 1997.

AISF demand

HYDERABAD: The State council of All-India Students' Federation (AISF) has demanded a high power committee to go into what best could be done to improve the standards of medical and engineering colleges in the State.

The AISF State president, L. Shravan Kumar, told a news conference here on Wednesday that most of the 17 medical and 285 engineering colleges in the State lacked basic facilities. He demanded weightage for Intermediate marks in EAMCET.

Protest against China's

decision on monk

HYDERABAD: Members of the regional Tibetan Youth and Friends of Tibet launched a two-day relay fast near Indira Park here on Wednesday protesting against China's decision to execute Tulku Tenzin Delek, a Buddhist monk, on December 2. The fast was to rouse the consciousness of people to the "atrocities perpetrated by the Chinese Government against Tibetans who were waging a peaceful movement seeking freedom from China's oppression", said Tenzin Lodue of RTYC and M. N. Rajesh, Co-ordinator, Friends of Tibet.

A revered Buddhist monk, Tulku Tenzin Delek, was wrongly charged with abetting violence against China and jailed two years ago on false charges and now was sentenced to death by hanging.

Held on molestation charge

ELURU: The police on Wednesday arrested a person, Devabhattula Daveedu Raju (19), on the charge of outraging the modesty of a student of an elementary school at Undrajavaram in West Godavari district.

According to the police, the youth committed the offence at the school where she was studying. When the girl raised alarm, a schoolteacher, who was residing in the vicinity, helped the police nab the accused.

Digvijay for Cuddapah today

CUDDAPAH: The All-India Congress Committee general secretary, Digvijay Singh, and the APCC president, K. Keshava Rao, will address a meeting of MPs, MLAs and District Congress Committee office-bearers here on Thursday.

They will lay the foundation stone for the DCC office building and address an extensive meeting of party workers at Kalakshetram at 2 p.m, according to the DCC president, Shaik Hussain. They will also address Muslim minorities at the Muslim Orphanage here at 6.30 p.m. They will make a night halt at Cuddapah R&B guesthouse and leave for Kurnool at 8 a.m. on November 26.

Dry weather prevails

Hyderabad: Weather was dry in the State on Wednesday. Adilabad and Medak turned out to be the coldest places for the day by recording the night temperature of 12 degree Celsius, the lowest in the State for the third consecutive day.

The minimum temperature fell at one or two places in coastal Andhra and it changed a little in Telangana and Rayalaseema.

According to a forecast by the State Met Office, weather will be mainly sunny in the State on Thursday.

Teachers' dharna

NELLORE: Functionaries of the Joint Action Committee of employees, teachers and workers, staged a dharna before the Collectorate on Wednesday, demanding a solution to their long-standing demands including scrapping of the new contributory pension policy, payment of interim relief till finalisation of the pay revision commission report and sanction of leave travel concession facility to teachers.

ZP meet

NELLORE: The general body meeting of Nellore Zilla Parishad will be held at 10 a.m. on December 1. This will be the second meeting after the general elections.

Transco raids

NELLORE: The vigilance officials of AP Transco, in Atmakur, who conducted a series of raids, registered 12 cases relating to alleged illegal use of electricity for domestic purposes.

Man dies in mishap

CUDDAPAH: A washerman, Hanmanthu (60) was fatally hit by a motorcycle near Gudipadu village in Duvvur mandal on Wednesday.

Hanmanthu had come on to the road to bring breakfast for his ailing grandson, when he suffered head injuries on being hit by a speeding motorcycle, according to the police. He succumbed to injuries at Proddatur Government hospital.

Consultant for SVIMS

Tirupati: Shyam Singh, formerly the Deputy Director of Central Drug Research Institute, has joined the biotechnology and bio-informatics department of the Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) here as the honorary consultant.

Invited to global meet

Tirupati: A Ranga Reddy, an economics professor with the SV University, has been invited to take part in an international seminar on `Ten years of WTO and towards an Asian union' to be held at Colombo, Sri Lanka, on November 27 and 28. Dr. Reddy will present a paper on `WTO agreements: India's challenges.'

SVETA director

Tirupati: Bhuman Subramanyam Reddy on Wednesday assumed office as the director of the TTD's Sri Ventakeswara Employees' Training Academy (SVETA). A Rayalaseema activist and founder of the Rayalaseema Adyayanala Samstha, Mr. Bhuman is a senior lecturer in one of the TTD-run institutions in Tirupati.

Blood donation camp held

NALGONDA: Since education alone cannot help intellectual development, students should participate in extracurricular activities for mental maturity, the Collector, K. Vijayanand, has said.

Inaugurating a blood donation camp organised by Kakatiya Degree College here on Wednesday, he said every individual must contribute his bit for the social cause. He asked students to join NCC, NSS and IRC programmes.

The College NCC wing in-charge, Venkat Reddy, said some 120 students donated blood at the camp.

Karate championship

KARIMNAGAR: The Okinawa Martial Arts Academy will be organising the 12th national level karate championship from November 26 to 28 in the town.

According to the chief instructor of the academy, Vasanth Kumar, some 2,000 participants from across the country will be competing in the event.

Badminton tourney

KARIMNAGAR: The Karimnagar town police, along with the Karimnagar District Badminton Association is organising the State invitation badminton tournament for men and women from November 26 to 28 at the APTransco indoor courts here.

Call to patronise libraries

WARANGAL: The Major Irrigation Minister, Ponnala Lakshmaiah, exhorted the people to patronise libraries and inculcate habit of reading among youth.

Participating as chief guest at the centenary celebrations of Rajaraja Narendra Andhra Bhasha Nilayam here on Wednesday, he appreciated the efforts of those who strived for the revival of the library. He also promised to donate Rs. 25,116 for the library.

The Hanamkonda MP, B. Vinod Kumar, requested the Minister see that the building housing the library be granted `heritage building' status.

RTC launches gift scheme

ADILABAD: The State Road Transport Corporation (RTC) has introduced a gift scheme on six routes under the Adilabad and Nirmal depots. Gifts will be given to passengers in these loss-making routes through a lucky dip.

Informing this to newsmen on Wednesday, the Adilabad RTC Depot Manager, Kishan, said passengers should write their name, address and phone number on the ticket and put it in boxes provided for the purpose in the same bus or in bus stands concerned. The lucky dip would be held in two spells according to the given schedule within the month.
