U.S. group hopes to revolutionise education

CHENNAI, NOV. 24. A U.S. based non-profit organisation working at improving the use of technology in education, is looking to establish an Indian affiliate.

The proposed Indian unit of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) will seek to link human and technological resources in the United States with Indian schools to meet educational needs here.

Annamalai Muthiah, who is playing a key role to bring ISTE to India, said after interactions with academics and leaders in technology and education, he was able to evolve ideas on community development and bringing in expertise and educational technologies to Indian schools. Several experts in the U.S want to extend help to Indians and people here feel the need for such expertise.

The ISTE is a non-profit professional organisation working among leaders in educational technology. It provides service training to teachers and helps them to improve teaching and learning by advancing the effective use of technology in schools.

"We hope to eventually achieve exchanges among schools, partnering among schools and tie-ups between individual schools and teachers from here and the ISTE members in the United States," Mr. Annamalai said.

The ISTE-India will work at collaboration and exchange programs between educators and students in India and the U.S., and conduct professional development programmes, monthly lectures, workshops and seminars for different communities in education.

A colloquium, "Spark the Learning Revolution" is to be held in Chennai on December 1 to launch the activities of ISTE-India. Robert D. King, political and economic counsellor in the U.S. Consulate- General, Dr. Knesek, CEO of ISTE, Lynn Nolan, director of professional development, ISTE will participate in sessions to define the activities of the Indian affiliate.
