4 held for robbery
ERODE NOV. 24. The Gobichettipalayam judicial magistrate, Ezhil Velan, today remanded to 15-day judicial custody an Al-Umma activist and three other youths who were arrested on the charge of waylaying and robbing a financier on Monday night. The Al-Umma activist, Abbas alias Oosi Abbas (28), is also an accused in the police constable Selvaraj murder case in Coimbatore. The car-borne Shanmugamurthy, a finance firm owner of Thookanaickkenpalayam in Sathyamangalam taluk, was waylaid by the four, riding motorcycle, near Cholipalam, Kallipatty. They threw chilli powder at the car driver and Shanmugamurthy, and snatched away money and gold from him. On a complaint by Shanmugamurthy, the Bangalapudur police alerted all stations. The Sathyamangalam police, during a vehicle check, secured Abbas and his associates Abu, Yasar and Kaja Hussian, all three under 25. The police recovered the stolen money and gold and seized two cellphones.
2 hacked to death
Kancheepuram Nov. 24. Two persons were hacked to death and one person was injured in a gang attack at two places at Vandalur near Chennai yesterday. According to the police, Raja (30) of Vandalur Colony was seriously injured when he tried to save his friend Velmurugan (29) from a car-borne gang near the Vandalur level-crossing around 5 p.m. The gang then went to Mannivakkam colony and hacked Jayaseelan (30) to death. Raja was taken to the government hospital, Chromepet, and later referred to the Government General Hospital, Chennai, where he died around 9 p.m. Velmurugan was admitted to the Chengalpattu Medical College Hospital.
Judicial custody for Inspector
Chengalpattu Nov. 24. The Chengalpattu Chief Judicial Magistrate, Rangarajan, today remanded to 15-day judicial custody a police Inspector, arrested by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-corruption wing personnel for accepting bribe. Thomson, attached to the Chengalpattu taluk police station, demanded a `mamool' from the owner of a hotel at Mamandur near here, to run the establishment beyond 11 p.m. Durairaj preferred a complaint with the DVAC personnel. Subsequently a trap was laid and Thomson was arrested after he received Rs.1,500 from the complainant near a hotel at Tambaram yesterday.
Police foil escape attempt
Ramanathapuram Nov. 24. The police today thwarted an attempt by 33 Sri Lankan refugees to escape to their homeland by illegal method. According to sources, the police intercepted two vehicles, one at Parthibanur and the other at Ramanathapuram west check-post and found that they were on way to Rameswaram to board a boat. The refugees, belonging to Arachalur camp in Erode district, were sent to their camp after warning.
Fog delays flights
CHENNAI NOV. 24. Heavy fog over the Delhi airport hit arrival and departure of domestic and international flights here today. According to airport sources, early morning domestic flights took off behind schedule because of delay in visibility clearance. Many international services were also disrupted. Visibility improved after noon and normality was restored.
Equipment seized
CHENNAI NOV. 24. Customs officials of the Air Cargo Complex in Chennai are investigating a case relating to a private Tamil television channel which had imported satellite communication equipment encoder and decoder antenna without any valid licence. The incident came to light after a surprise search by the officials on the importer's premises, airport sources told The Hindu . The importer had cleared through the Chennai Air Cargo complex the consignment without any valid licence issued by the Wireless Planning and Coordination (WPC) wing of the Union Ministry of Communications. The value of the equipment was Rs.1.3 crores. In view of the prima facie evidence that the goods were cleared without any licence and that the company had violated the provisions of the Customs Act and the Indian Telegraphics Act, the equipment, with a total market value of about Rs. 3 crores and mounted on outside broadcasting van, was seized under the Customs Act.
Sabarimala prasadam by post
CHENNAI NOV. 24. The Department of Posts and the Travancore Devaswom Board, Kerala, will supply by post prasadam items to Ayyappa devotees during the Mandalapooja/Makaravilakku season at Sabarimala. The devotees can send a money order/speed money order for Rs. 200 to the Executive Officer, Travancore Devaswom Board, Sabarimala 689 713, Pathanamthitta district, says a press release. The season, begun on November 16, ends in January 2005.
Stamp on Dula Bhaya Kag
CHENNAI NOV. 24. The Department of Posts will release tomorrow a commemorative stamp, in the denomination of Rs. 5 on Dula Bhaya Kag, a poet, nationalist, composer and singer of folk songs. The stamp, the first-day cover and the information sheet will be available for sale at all philatelic bureaux/counters from the date of issue, says a press release.
No water
SALEM NOV. 24. There will be no water supply in the city tomorrow (November 25) following a burst in the main pipeline of the Mettur-Attur Comprehensive Water Supply Scheme at Kottagoundanpatti near Karuppur here this morning. According to the Salem Corporation Commissioner, T. Paulsamy, a team of employees from the Corporation and Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board would repair the pipeline as early as possible.
Suspended
ERODE NOV. 24. The Joint Director of Cooperatives, B. Joghee, suspended the secretary of the Vellakoil Primary Agricultural Cooperative Bank, Shanmugasundaram, today. Complaints were levelled against the secretary for not supplying ration goods to the fair price shop run by the PACB.
Special buses
Dharmapuri Nov. 24. In view of the Tiruvannamalai Karthigai Deepam festival, the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Dharmapuri division, will operate festival specials through select routes from November 25 to 27. Special buses would ply from Dharmapuri-Tiruvannamalai, Harur-Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri-Tiruvannamalai and Hosur-Tiruvannamalai.
Granite seized
Dharmapuri Nov. 24. Sixty granite stones, which were being smuggled in a lorry from Jegadevi, were seized at Harur here on Tuesday. According to official sources, a team conducting vehicle checks on the Dharmapuri-Harur Road, seized the lorry with granite stones smuggled from quarries in Jegadevi for sale in the open market.
Killed
SALEM Nov. 24. A 35-year-old woman was killed by a murder accused at Kootathupatti village near here on Tuesday night. The police said that Ilavarasan (25), who was on bail in connection with a murder case, had developed a relationship with Kanaka of the same village. On Tuesday, when Kanaka was standing near the public tap, Ilavarasan asked her to accompany him. But she refused. Irked at this, Ilavarasan hacked her with a sickle. She died on the spot. Ilavarasan is absconding.
Water release ordered
CHENNAI Nov.24. The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, today ordered the release of water from the Manimuthar dam in Tirunelveli district from the main canal to provide irrigation to four reaches of the reservoir. The release will benefit 24,922 acres at Ambasamudram, Nanguneri, Tirunelveli, Palayamkottai and Radhapuram in Tirunelveli district and Srivaikuntam, Tiruchendur, and Sattankulam inTuticorin district.
4 held, property recovered
Nagercoil Nov. 24 . The police arrested four persons and recovered stolen property worth Rs. 3 lakhs from them today. According to the police, the Superintendent of Police, Ramasubrmanian, has formed a special police team to nab the culprits involved in a number of theft case. The police nabbed Madurai Veeran (24) of Nagercoil, Seenu (20), Mariyappan (24) and Mankind (27) of Tuticorin and recovered stolen property from them.
Woman murdered
Nagercoil Nov. 24 . A woman was murdered in a broad daylight here today. According to the police, Vijayakumari (32), wife of hotlier Sachinanadan of Vadaserryt had an illicit relationship with Krishnan of Vakaiyadi near Kanyakuamri, despite his repeated warning. Sachinanadan attacked her with a sickle and she died on the spot.
Aid for widows
Tuticorin Nov. 24. The District Revenue Officer, K. Baskaran, today distributed financial assistance to widows under the Distress Relief Scheme initiated by the Government. At a function held here, the DRO gave away cheques for Rs.10,000 to each of the 16 beneficiaries, who are residing in various parts of the district. Later speaking to mediapersons, Mr. Baskaran said it was planned to distribute similar relief to 74 more widows, who are living below the poverty line, before the end of the current fiscal.
Four held
TIRUNELVELI NOV.24. The Saambavarvadakarai police have arrested four persons, who allegedly ransacked a house and assaulted an inmate, owing to personal enmity. The police said N. Murugesan (25) of Melapaattakurichi recently eloped with D. Prema (19), his neighbour. The girl's father and vice-president of Paattakurichi panchayat, P. Durairaj alias Muthiah (52), his wife, D. Krishnammal (40), his son, D. Kumar (24), and relatives, P. Murugan, P. Ganapathi, C. Raj, C. Muppidathi and K. Muthusamy (25) ransacked the house of Murugesan last night. They also reportedly attacked Murugesan's mother, D. Vijayalakshmi (50). Based on a complaint from Mrs. Vijayalakshmi, who has been admitted to the hospital, the police arrested Kumar, Durairaj, Krishnammal and Muppidathi.
