By Our Staff Reporter
KOLLAM, NOV. 24. The Kureepuzha garbage depot issue, which had been simmering for years, has finally been doused. The issue was amicably settled today at meeting called by the District Collector, B. Sreenivas, with the local residents of Kureepuzha in the presence of the Kollam Mayor, Sabita Beegum. At per the settlement agreement, a special package for the expansion and modernisation of the garbage depot would be implemented with the cooperation of the residents. The families residing on the `puramboke' land adjacent to the depot would be shifted to a suitable location in the area. They will be given three cents of land each and finance to construct houses. The land required for expanding the deport would be acquired by paying the price. The quarters of the municipal employees would also be shifted. As per the package, dumping of garbage collected from the city would resume at the depot. Temporary sheds would be erected at the depot and the garbage dumped there would be converted into compost under the guidelines of the Pollution Control Board and the Green Kerala Vision.
